Monday, January 25th, Eigo Kiso 3, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #15)

Today: This is the last class for this semester, and this academic year. I will calculate and tell you your grades for this semester.

I will put everyone into one big breakout room and then one by one you will come back to the main session and with me I will check your absences and the grades for your paragraphs. And then I will tell you your final grade.

If you have any questions about English or your paragraphs, please stay in the breakout room until everyone has received their grades. Then we can deal with your questions. But my overall advise to everyone is that you should be checking your work more before sending it to be graded. Especially in the first semester, I spent too much time changing careless mistakes. There was a general improvement in the second semester, but also that is what I expected. Your teacher(s) next year will expect another improvement over this year.

Anyway, I think everyone did a good job this year under difficult circumstances. Well done! Finally, if TPU asks you to fill out a questionnaire for this course, please remember to do that.

Friday, January 22nd, Sogo Eigo 3, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:12 (Class #13)

A reminder: I have received only a few paragraphs. Although the deadline is January 30th, please try not to leave it until the last minute to write your paragraph. This should be, in theory, your best paragraph, not just another one that you write a few minutes before the midnight deadline.

Today: We will continue in Unit 10, Smart Advice.

Session 1: Re-read pp 187/188; Do p. 189, B. (This is about FrontlineSMS. You do not have to watch this Youtube introduction to this software, but if you are interested in this topic, and have 5 minutes, it is quite interesting.)

Session 2: Do p. 189, C; Do p. 191, A.

Session 3: Do p. 193, A; Answer B #2 ( I will ask you)

Finish (Next week we will finish the textbook, and in class #15 I will check your absences and grades.)

Thursday, January 21st, Eigo Kiso, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #14)

A reminder: Our last class will be next Thursday. I will calculate your grades for the semester and tell you your grade on that day. I may also have a short talk with you if it helps me to decide your grade. If you have missed one of the 10 point conversations, you will have a chance to do it on that day. If you have missed a conversation and you do not attend the last class, I cannot give you any points, and your grade will be significantly lower.

Today: We will do conversation #4. This is the only thing that we will do today, and this effectively finishes this semester's work and this course. The topics you can choose from are on p. 116, Before you Listen, and p. 120, Discussion Questions. Obviously, just choose one topic.

The conversation should be 60 seconds long for 2 people and 90 seconds long for a group of 3. I may ask you some questions when you have finished your conversation.

Fluent and fast: 10

Fluent and fast but mistakes: 9

Slow but good grammar: 8

Slow and with mistakes: 7

Slow and with much hesitation/repeating: 6

Under time/very slow/lots of hesitation/repeating: 5

Please make sure you come back to the main session at least 15 minutes before the end of class.

Finish.

A reminder: The deadline for submitting your paragraphs is next Saturday, January 16th.

  2. Tokyo is exciting. There has many famous restaurants.

Finish. There is no homework.

(Edit on January 11th: Dear students, at the end of our class I got the idea that some students would like to write their 3rd and final paragraph sooner rather than later due to our next class being in two weeks. Perhaps you have exams to study for as well.

Therefore, I will give you the topic for the 3rd paragraph now. You can write and submit it at anytime before the deadline of January 30th. The topic is from your textbook: p. 200, at the top: Writing Task: 'Imagine someone has asked you for advice about preparing to go college (university). What advice would you give?' You can give advice about coming to study at TPU if you want to.

When you write this paragraph, please ignore the Covid-19 pandemic and write as if university life has returned to normal. There are some more hints on p. 200. Email me at dwhorsley@yahoo.co.jp if you have any questions.)
