November 2020

Friday, November 5th, Sogo Eigo 3, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #6)

A reminder: there is no class next week. Our next class (#7) will be on Friday, November 20th. There will be a make-up class at the end of the semester.

Also, please remember to use this address when you email me: dwhorsley@yahoo.co.jp

Today: Finish Unit 7, start Unit 8, and set the topic for the first paragraph.

Session 1: Read p. 135 A; Read Language for Writing. Do pp. 135/136, B. (I know that this is very, very easy, but don't make any mistakes about third-person singular 's' and in your paragraph that you send me, I don't want any mistakes with 's' at the end of words, either third-person singular or plural 's.') Do. p. 136, C (choose one topic.)

Session 2: Read p. 136, Writing Skill; Do p. 137 D; Do p. 139, Revising Practice; Do p. 140, Editing Practice.

Session 3: Read p. 141; Answer #2 (I will ask you; everyone in your group should have a different answer.) Read p. 142 Great Monuments; Do B; Do p. 144, A.

Finish. Please write and send me a Process Paragraph. The topic is the life cycle of any insect/plant/animal/fish, etc that interests you. Draft 2 on p. 139 about the life cycle of a butterfly is a good example, but you must choose a different topic. Use lots of sequence words; look at p. 128, Reading Skill for examples. The deadline is the evening of Saturday, November 14. You could write your paragraph next Friday during your free time because we don't have a class. Anyway, I will start checking them and have them back to you by class #7.

Thursday, November 5th, Eigo Kiso 4, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #5)

Today: Finish Unit 7

Session 1: Do p. 79 C  and D in your group. (For D, you can start each sentence with 'I would highlight that...') Individually, answer F #2 'What are your goals for the next few years?' (I will ask you.)

Session 2: Look at p. 82 A, B, and C. In your group, make a recipe for some food dish, like curry rice, etc. Your group should have twice as many steps as members of your group. So, if your group has 3 members, there should be 6 steps. If your group has 4 members, there should be 8 steps. Each student will tell me 2 of the steps. You will have to work on this in your group so that everyone in the group knows the recipe. (p. 83, C is an example.)

Session 3:  Look at p. 83, End of Unit Task, A. There are four questions. Please try to apply these to Toyama.

(Ignore the fact that we are still being affected by Covid-19.) When you have enough so that each member in your group can tell me some things, come back to the main session.

Finish.

Wednesday, November 4th, Sogo Eigo 4, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #4)

Today: Continue in Unit 7.

Session 1: Read p. 128, Speaking Skill carefully: Do A. When you give me the answer, please read the whole sentence. p. 129, Grammar for Speaking; Do p. 130, C (This is very, very easy. Just use the words in brackets () as a hint. When you give me the answer, please read the whole sentence.)

Session 2: Do p. 132, A; Answer p. 131, B, 1. (I will ask you.)

Session 3: Read p. 134, A; Do p. 135, B and C.

Finish. In the next class you will have to make a conversation for your first set of points.

Monday, November 2nd, Eigo Kiso 3, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #5)

Today: Finish Unit 4, Process Paragraphs, and set paragraph for homework.

Session 1: Do p. 96, Exs. 5 and 6.

Session 2: Do pp. 98/99, Exs 1, 2 and 3. (For Ex. 3, you do not have to explain.)

Session 3: Make another recipe for some food dish, like you did on p. 90. This time, your group should have twice as many steps as members of your group. So, if your group has 3 members, there should be 6 steps. If your group has 4 members, there should be 8 steps. Each student will tell me 2 of the steps. You will have to work on this in your group. Everyone should have the same recipe.

This finishes unit 4. You now have to write the first paragraph for your homework. Write a process paragraph; ie, how to do something in steps. The topic is open: you choose. There are some ideas on p 102, but you can choose your own topic. Ask or email me if you want to confirm that your topic is ok. Use the words on p. 88 in the Language and Grammar Focus. Your paragraph must be reasonably long and without careless mistakes. The deadline is the evening of November 7th so that I can start checking on November 8th.

Finish.
