August 2020

Thursday, August 20, Eigo Kiso 2, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #15)

Today is class #15. It is the last class for this semester.

The first class of the next semester is scheduled to be on October 2nd, but please check your schedule. We will do the other half of the textbook next semester, so don't lose it during the summer vacation! And please have it ready on the first day of classes in the second semester.

At the moment, classes in the second semester will probably be online, just like this semester. But the university will contact you about this. Our last class was two weeks ago. On that day, TPU had a connection problem, so I could not ask you questions about your conversation #4, on page 60, D, 3. I will do that today. This will have a small effect on your final grade.

Regarding your final grade, everybody has scored in the 80s at the moment, (=A) and some people have scored in the 90s (=S). You  did the textbook for 15 weeks and did four conversations. I generally notice that your weak point is your listening ability. If I ask you a (simple) question, you don't answer, or your answer doesn't match the question, or it takes you a long time to answer, or I have to repeat my question really slowly. This is why not everybody scores in the 90s.

Today: I will make one or two breakout rooms. (Depending on whether students need to do a makeup conversation). Then I will call you one by one to ask you some questions and to give you your grade. You can ask me any questions at this time. When you have finished, please call the next person and then you can leave the Zoom meeting.

Finish.

Have a nice vacation!

Wednesday, August 19th, Sogo Eigo 2, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #15)

Today is the last class for this semester.

Please check whether you have to answer a questionnaire for this course. If you do, please do it while you are waiting in the breakout room.

At the moment, the first class of the second semester is scheduled to be on Wednesday, October 7th. In the second semester, we will complete the second half of the textbook. Please do not lose the textbook in the summer vacation, and please have it ready on the first day of classes.

At the moment, the second semester will probably be online, like this semester.

Because there are many things to do today, I will give up doing the listening on page 96:

Listening5

If you want to do this by yourself, please do it and ask me for the answers, or email me for the answers after class.

Today: There are two breakout rooms. One room is for students to prepare a makeup conversation. The other room is for students waiting to check absences/grades. After you have finished checking your grades and have called the next person, you are free to leave.

Finish.

At the moment, the first class for the second semester is scheduled for Monday, October 5th. Classes in the second semester will be online.

We will use the same textbook and complete units 4-6 in the second semester. (This is the only textbook that you need in the second semester.) So, don't lose the textbook in the summer vacation, and have it ready for the first class of the second semester.

Today, I will put you all into one breakout room. Please wait there until you are called. Please complete the course questionnaire while you are waiting.

When I talk to you, I will tell you your grade for this semester and have a small talk with you. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to say them while we are one-to-one chatting.

After you have called the next person that I want to talk to, you are free to leave the chat. See you in October!

(For everybody, if you want to improve your English over the summer vacation, please go online and learn about 'shadowing.' I'm sure that you have heard about shadowing, but it is the best way to improve your English when there are no classes, if you do some every day.)

Wednesday, August 12th, Sogo Eigo 2, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #14)

The last class for this semester will be next week, Wednesday August 19th.

If you haven't done the questionnaire for this class, please do it before then end of the semester.

Last week, I couldn't upload the listening file for the listening exercise on p. 96. That problem has been fixed, but we will do the listening next week.

Today: Conversation #4 (Last conversation)

Session 1: Make a conversation based on p. 96, A, #3 (marriage topic).

If you are in a group of three, the conversation should last about 90 seconds. If you are in a group of two, it should last just 60 seconds.

It should be a conversation. Don't speak just one at a time. If you do that, it will reduce your grade a bit.

We only have to do this conversation today, but also I will be asking you questions to check your listening. This listening part will also impact your final grade a little.

Finish.

Friday, August 7th, Sogo Eigo 1, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #14)

Session 3: Do p. 74 C and D.

Finish

Thursday, August 6th, Eigo Kiso 2, 9:00-10:30 and 10:40-12:10 (Class #14)

Please remember to do the questionnaire for this semester.

And, please remember that Class #15 (the last class) is on August 20th, NOT next week.

In the last class I will check your absences for this semester, and calculate your grade. Also, we will finish Unit 5 by doing pages 54 and 55. Finally, anybody who missed making any of the conversations can do a make-up conversation.

Today: Make a conversation based on p. 60, D, 3: 'Do you use public transportation to get around? Why or why not?' It must be a conversation, not just one person talking at a time. You must speak on average for 30 seconds per person.

This is your last conversation (#4), so please make sure you are back in the main session at least 20 minutes before the end of class (10:10 or 11:50) because I will ask you questions this week.

Finish.

Schedule for August:

Class #14 is on Thursday, August 13th. (Monday, August 10th is a national holiday.)

You have to write your 3rd and final paragraph after this class; the deadline is Saturday, August 8th. I will grade them on the 9th and 10th. Send them to me at dwhorsley@yahoo.co.jp, as usual.

Today: Continue in Unit 3: Example Paragraphs

Session 1: Do p. 65, Ex. 5. You don't have to do them all. In your group, choose 5 in total and do those. Read p. 67, Language and Grammar Focus. Do p. 68, Ex. 1 (Don't make any mistakes about third person singular 's' in the sentences!

Session 2: Do p. 69, Exs. 2 and 3.

Session 3: Do p. 71, Ex. 1

Finish

Write an example paragraph. The topic is on how people can stay healthy (p. 76, at the top). You need a title, topic sentence and at least three examples of how people can stay healthy. Then write a conclusion. There are many ways to stay healthy, and there is a lot of material that you can write in your supporting sentences, so it is not difficult to write a good and long paragraph.
